The Coagulation Cascade
The coagulation cascade is a complex interplay of reactions between factor proteins that ultimately lead to clot formation. These pathways are often difficult to both learn and teach, but is an essential physiological process to understand for students and practitioners in the healthcare industry.
Project Overview
Client: Michelle Dunphy, RN, MSN, and Tara Hodgson, RN, MSN | British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT)
Roles: Script Writer, Storyboarding, Illustrator, Motion Graphics Editor
Software Used: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, AfterEffects
Target Audience: Registered Nurses studying Paediatric Critical Care
In collaborating with the developer of the Paediatric Critical Care Specialty Nursing Program, I created several animations as part of a video series to accompany the content taught by the instructors. These educational videos will allow students to visualize and follow along each step of the cascade, and help them understand how the process applies within a clinical context.

The Process
Once the written content was completed, in-depth storyboards with a simple but engaging 2D illustrative approach was developed to show each step of the coagulation cascade.
Background research was conducted to ensure accuracy in the content. The client also collaborated in the writing process as the subject matter expert to confirm the content would fit well with the course modules.
Once the script was approved by the client, assets for the animation were developed. As the content itself can be confusing, a simpler 2D artistic approach was used to symbolize the different factors.
With the storyboard complete, the assets can now be carefully animated into sequence, and timed accordingly to the script.
